Your daily calorie target

Most apps compute a calorie target from height, weight and a guess at your activity level, then never revisit it. Here the target is derived from your weekly budget, and the weekly budget is corrected against what your weight actually does.

Measured, then predicted

A formula is used only until there is enough of your own data to do better. Once there is, your maintenance level is measured from the relationship between what you logged and how your weight moved, and the target follows that instead.

This matters because the standard formulas are routinely a few hundred calories out for an individual, and a few hundred calories is the entire size of a sensible deficit.

It refuses when it should

If the data is too thin or too noisy to support a measured figure, the app says so rather than presenting a confident number it cannot justify. A stated "not enough data yet" is more useful than a precise-looking guess.

Questions

Can I override it?
Yes. You can set your own target and the app will work to it, while still telling you what the data suggests.
How long before it has enough data?
Roughly a few weeks of reasonably complete logging and regular weigh-ins. Until then you get the formula estimate, clearly labelled as one.
